COVID-19 has exposed deadly gaps in our nation’s public health data infrastructure. After years of neglect, our antiquated public health data systems were outmatched by a fast-moving, highly infectious virus. Since fiscal year 2020, annual appropriations and injections of supplemental funding through COVID-19 relief legislation have helped buoy our public health data systems. However, to truly transform these systems and protect the health of our nation we need robust, long-term investment in each of the five pillars that constitute a true 21st Century public health data system: electronic case reporting, laboratory information management systems, electronic vital records systems, the National Notifiable Disease System, and syndromic surveillance. We also must invest in the skilled workforce necessary to operate and maintain state-of-the art data systems that allow for seamless exchange of information and keep up with the pace of evolving technology.
We cannot allow another pandemic of the magnitude of COVID-19 to wreak havoc on our health and our economy. Join the Data: Elemental to Health campaign for an important discussion on how we modernize and equip our public health data systems for future threats.
