NDD is (Re)United
By Grace Kranstover, CHF Staff
With the House passage of the Limit, Save, Grow Act, House Republicans are hoping to pair any debt ceiling negotiations along with federal spending cuts. Proposed cuts have ranged anywhere from 22% to more depending on whether cuts are made across the board, or if specific funding streams for the Department of Defense are included or not.
All of this has created echoes of the past, when we faced steep budgetary spending caps that severely hindered medical research and health related programs. In response, thousands of organizations and coalitions came together back in 2011 to form NDD United and combat sequestration’s devastating impact on the programs we care about. We had one goal, spoke with one voice, and succeeded in advocating for NDD appropriations with three bipartisan budget deals that mitigated the legislated budget caps over a decade.
In response to the latest budgetary threats, the NDD United community is reuniting. Together, CHF along with the Committee for Education Funding, the Campaign to Invest in America's Workforce, and the Coalition on Human Needs have coordinated a letter of over 760 organizations at the local, state, and federal level calling on Congress to reject cuts to NDD appropriations. Instead, we ask that Congress set funding for fiscal year 2024 at a level that recognizes both rising costs and the need for investment in programs important to fostering economic growth and meeting human needs.
