Public Health Agencies
THE FEDERAL ROLE IN PUBLIC HEALTH
The federal government helps Americans make informed choices and take personal responsibility for their health, and ultimately protects and improves Americans’ lives and welfare. The following agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services play a critical role in promoting and preserving our nation’s health.
- The National Institutes of Health discovers cures and treatments for illness—physical and behavioral—through funding to local universities and research centers.
- The Food and Drug Administration ensures that food, drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics that come to market are safe and effective.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the nation’s first responder in health emergencies. CDC also supports communities in preventing disease.
- The Health Resources and Services Administration serves as the pipeline for new health providers and supports health service delivery to those in your community.
- The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality provides evidence to improve health care costs, quality, and access through funding to local universities and research centers.
- The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration supports communities in providing mental health and substance abuse treatment and prevention to those in need, including veterans.
- The Indian Health Service funds health care services and local facilities that serve American Indian and Alaska Native populations.
